LINEAR TACTICS

Rule for Miniature Wargames in the Eighteenth Century

By Larry Irons and Doug Wildfong

LINEAR TACTICS is a set of Seven Years' War rules using a 1:50 figure to man ratio and resulting in 12 figures per infantry battalion. The basic unit is the battalion/squadron, and the next higher formation is the brigade, consisting of two or more battalions/squadrons.

LINEAR TACTICS uses a move/counter-move system. Cavalry has the ability to react to certain situations during the opponent's move, including exploitation of breakthroughs. However, solid lines of disciplined infantry can keep cavalry at bay.

LINEAR TACTICS uses a roster system. Each unit's fighting ability is based on its combat effectiveness (CE). The CE value of each unit is related to its training, morale, and strength. The CE system simulates well the ability of disciplined infantry such as the Prussians or English to fight against larger numbers of inferior quality enemy. LINEAR TACTICS includes national characteristics charts to help the gamer determine the CE values of each of the troops types from each nation.
